Adelphi Theatre - For nearly two centuries a theatre has stood on this spot. The original theatre, built for performances by the stagestruck daughter of a wealthy businessman, opened in 1806. Between 1837 and 1845 the novels of Charles Dickens were dramatised here almost as soon as they were penned. In 1858 that theatre was replaced and, for the next 42 years the new theatre witnessed the success of many melodramas. Remodelled again in 1901 the theatre's name was changed to the Century until the weight of public opinion forced a return to the old name. In 1929 the theatre was again pulled down and replaced in 1930 with the Ernest Schaufelberg designed Art Deco building seen today.
